Of the total 990 successful candidates in the final list of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations, 41 Muslims have made it to this year’s result with Saad Miya Khan who was earlier coached at Jamia Millia Islamia Residential Coaching Academy bagging the twenty-fifth rank. The number of Muslim candidates is lesser than last year but comparatively better if results of the last few years are taken into account.
In 2017, 51 Muslims had cleared the exams, in 2016, 36, while the number stood at 38 in 2015, 34 in 2014 and 30 in 2013.
The selected UPSC candidates are recommended for various government posts which include Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and several other services.
Although Muslims comprise 13.4% of the total population, they are dismally represented in the top government services, often due to lack of education and unavailability of resources. They account for about 2% in the civil services.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) declared the final result of the 2017 civil services examinations on Friday afternoon.Hyderabad’s Durishetty Anudeep has topped the exam. Others in the top five are Anu Kumari, Sachin Gupta, Atul Prakash and Pratham Kaushik.
Out of 990 selected candidates, 476 belong to general category, 275 to OBC while 165 and 74 to SC and ST category respectively.
Six Muslims have figured in top 100 recommended for different Civil Services posts in India.
The 06 Muslims who figured among top 100 are
Saad Miya Khan (Rank 25), Sameera S (Rank 28), Fazlul Haseeb (Rank 36), Jameel Fathima Zeba (Rank 62), Haseen Zahera Rizvi (Rank 87) and Azhar Siya (Rank 97).
A total of 40 Muslims (4.04%) have figured in the list of 990 successful candidates. Among them are Syed Ali Abbas (Rank 137), Mutiur Rahman (Rank 154), Aasim Khan (Rank 165), Syed Imran Masood (Rank 10) and Mohammad Junaid (Rank 200).
In 2016, 10 Muslims were among top 100 and a total of 52 Muslims had cracked the coveted exam and were included in the list of 1,099 successful candidates (4.7%). In 2015, 34 out of the total 1,078 candidates were Muslims, in 2014 38 out of the total 1,236 were Muslims and in 2013, out of the total 1,122 successful candidates 34 were Muslims.
In 2012, 30 Muslims were among the successful candidates, four of them were among top 100. Similarly in 2011, 31 Muslims were among the 920 successful candidates. In 2009, among the 875 successful candidates, 21 were Muslims with Dr. Shah Faisal of Kashmir topping the exam at the national level.
Durishetty Anudeep (Roll No. 156266) has topped the Civil Services Examination, 2017. He belongs to OBC category. He qualified the examination with Anthropology as his optional subject. He has graduated with BE (Electronics & Instrumentation) degree from BITS, Pilani.
Anu Kumari (Roll No. 48547) is the topper among the female candidates securing an overall Second rank. She has graduated with BSc (Hons) in Physics from Delhi University and has done MBA (Finance & Marketing) from IMT, Nagpur.
The top 25 candidates comprise of 17 men and 08 women.
Educational qualification-wise the top 25 candidates are from Engineering; Sciences; Anthropology; Management; Law; Mathematics; Medical and Commerce background graduating from premier Institutions of the country such as IITs, NIT, NLU, BITS Pilani, NSIT, DU, Mumbai University, PEC, ICAI, Pune University, etc.
Optional subjects of the top 25 candidates in the examination ranged from Anthropology, Commerce & Accountancy, Economics, Geography, Law, Maths, Physics, Political Science & International Relations, Sociology, and Malayalam Literature.
The recommended candidates also include 29 Physically Disabled persons (09 Orthopedically Handicapped; 08 Visually Challenged and 12 Hearing Impaired).
Saumya Sharma (Roll No. 3674), a Physically Disabled person, with hearing impairment, has secured an overall Ninth Rank.
The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2017 was conducted on 18th June, 2017. 9,57,590 candidates applied for this examination, out of which 4,56,625 candidates actually appeared. 13,366 candidates qualified for appearance in the Written (Main) Examination held in October – November, 2017. Of them, 2568 candidates qualified for the Personality Test conducted in February - April.
We would like to congratulate to all those who have successfully cleared the Civil Services Examination. Our best wishes are with them as they begin their journey to serve this great nation and even to those who could not clear the exam – such moments are a part of life. This must not deter them from their future attempts.
